Five-paragraph essay writing tips
Most, if not all, high school and college standardized tests include a writing portion. Students receive a writing hint and then they must write an essay on the topic. Writing standardized tests can strike fear into the hearts and minds of students of all ages, but it doesn't have to. Once you know what to expect and understand how to write a 5 paragraph essay, you will be ready to tackle any essay writing prompt.
Types of essays on standardized tests
When you start writing an essay for a standard test, you must first decide what type of essay you are being asked to write. There are many different types of essays, including narrative, explanatory, reasoned, persuasive, comparative, literary, and more. The type of essay will determine your topic and thesis. Essays for standardized tests are usually persuasive, in which you answer a question, or literary, in which you write about what you read.
For standardized tests, students are typically required to write a five-paragraph essay that should be between 500 and 800 words long and include an introductory paragraph, three auxiliary paragraphs, and a closing paragraph.
First paragraph: introduction
The first paragraph introduces your topic. The introduction is the most important paragraph because it gives direction to the entire essay. It also sets the tone and you want to grab the reader's attention with interest and clarity. The best way to start dating is:
Describe your main idea or the content of the essay in one sentence. You can usually use the essay tip or question to compose this sentence.
Develop a thesis or what you want to say about the main idea. When writing a clue is a question, your dissertation is usually the answer to that question.
List three points or arguments that support your thesis in order of importance (one sentence for each).
Second, third and fourth paragraphs: additional details
These three paragraphs form the basis of the essay. They provide details like facts, quotes, examples, and specific statistics for the three points of your introductory paragraph that support your thesis. Take the points listed in the introduction and discuss each in one paragraph. Here's how:
First, write a topical sentence that summarizes your point of view. This is the first sentence of your paragraph.
Then write your argument or why you think the topic sentence is correct.
Finally, present your evidence (facts, quotes, examples, and statistics) to support your arguments.
You now have your main paragraph. Repeat for steps two and three. The best thing about presenting your main ideas in the first paragraph is that it provides an outline for your main paragraphs and eliminates the need to write paragraph transitions.
Fifth paragraph: conclusion
The final paragraph should summarize the essay. This is often the most difficult paragraph to write. In your conclusion, you should reformulate the thesis and link it to the main body of the essay in a sentence explaining how each point supports the thesis. Your last sentence should clearly and convincingly reflect your main idea. Make sure you don't include new information in your conclusion.
