Sophie recalls an occasion when she was rewarded for her hard work in overcoming her juvenile rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
Sophie:
Doug Bruno is this really intense camp, basketball camp, which I went to for a few years in middle school. And it’s overnight camp at a college, and my arthritis was really bad then, and it was like over 100 degrees in these gyms because they didn’t have air-conditioning. So I went there and even though my arthritis hurt so bad, I could not run, I still tried my best and I got this award that said, “Never give up, no retreat, never surrender award,” which I still have in my room because it was one of the first awards I ever got. And I wasn’t the best basketball player at that camp, but I was so proud to get that award because the coaches admired my courage and strength through the arthritis.
