In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Daily Dose", Bailey Mosier discusses a study that which links strong teacher role models may play a role in keeping your kids away from alcohol and drugs.

Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier. This is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.

We’ve known that great teachers can help mold the lives of our children in positive ways, but in the first of its kind, data-driven study, we’re learning teachers can influence our children’s alcohol use.

Researchers at the Seattle Children's Research Institute analyzed 500 youth and found that the connections children have with their teachers may help prevent kids from experimenting with alcohol and drugs at an early age. Students in middle school who felt more emotional support from teachers had a lower risk of early alcohol and illicit drug use.

The students defined teacher support as feeling close to a teacher or being able to discuss problems with a teacher. And the closer they felt to the teacher, the lower risk they had for substance use. Just another example of how important great teachers are in our children’s lives.
