Dr. Kharazmi explains the differences between bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Kharazmi:
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is a form of hormone replace therapy, the difference being is that predominately hormone replacement therapy was in the form of synthetic hormones and these are hormones that are derived basically in a laboratory setting. They are altered such that pharmaceutical companies can call on their own.

So, most common hormone that was utilized for many years has been for instance, Premarin, and we’re talking about conjugated estrogens and the difference being is this, is that, when you have a synthetic hormone the hormone itself is different from what the body is used to seeing.

Bioidentical hormone tries to mimic what the body has experienced for many years, similar chemical structure. Therefore your body really tends to accept it more readily without any ill effects. Synthetic hormones, it has been shown that also elicits some bad effects or responses.

These responses are troublesome in the sense that all the bad, negative press that we get from hormone replacement therapy is felt to be some of the synthetic aspects of the hormone such as blood clots, strokes, issues in terms of cancer, issues in terms of again the side effects that are unfavorable long term such as even people have thought about dementia.

It’s just funny because a lot of studies have shown also hormone therapy can improve or delay cognitive impairment such as dementia, memory loss, have heart protection and the theories behind it is that ultimately synthetic hormones may be eliciting certain things that are unharmful for your body whereas bioidentical hormone therapy perhaps are replacing something that is common in the body and the body is used to seeing for many, many years.
