Dr. Sorof describes an EKG heart test and explains why it is important. Dr. Sorof is an experienced cardiologist at Banner Good Samaritan in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Sorof:
The EKG is a snapshot of the electricity that is conducted through your heart. Because the electricity has a fundamental basis with the plumbing or the arteries that supply blood flow to the muscle it helps cardiologists know if there’s a problem in the bloodstream that’s filling the heart muscle.
Because if you have an abnormal EKG and your doctor is concerned, it’s important to see a cardiologist so we can evaluate the EKG with further testing such as an ultrasound, to assess your valves and the function of the pumping chambers of the heart, or a stress test letting us know that if the electrical system is not 100 percent, it might be that the heart needs, is under a lot of stress and we need to do evaluation of what could be occurring.
