Dr. Aklog introduces himself and describes heart valve disease.

Dr. Aklog:
Hello. I am Dr. Lishan Aklog. I am the Director of the Medical Advisory Board for EmpowHER.com. I am a heart surgeon and the Chief of Heart Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. I spent most of my career in the Northeast, including 20 years at Harvard University.

The valves in your heart can be thought of as doors between the various chambers within the heart. There are four valves in your heart and heart valves are designed to allow your heart to pump the blood efficiently in one direction. Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of the valves in your heart do not function properly, either they do not open or they don’t close properly, and that prevents the heart from being able to function as efficiently as it should.
