A lesson in wellbeing . . . it is all about balance!

By November 7, 2011 - 9:00pm

This week, I had an ah-ha moment. My wellness coaching course assignment was to set a personal wellness goal that I could reach during the 12 weeks of the course. For over 5 years, I have religiously gotten 10K steps a day . . . but the last couple months, it has dropped off to more like 7K. So, my goal had to do with getting back up to my previous level and cooking/eating at home more. After all, wellness and health are one in the same, right?

I told my coaching partner that I planned to wait until I rearranged my work schedule after Thanksgiving to start on my goal. She encouraged me to think about my barriers so I could begin to make changes sooner, perhaps.

Then it came to me . . . the difference between "wellness" and "wellbeing". I have been reading Blue Zones - Thrive, and even blogged about commuting a couple days ago . . . how long commutes have been found to significantly decrease our ability to thrive. Also, the book talks about how having friends at work empowers us to thrive. (Gallup's Wellbeing and Vital Friends books talk about the importance of friends at work, also.)

I am shifting things around to eliminate the commute and shift more hours to working with people who I consider friends. This shift is coming . . . with the turkey and dressing . . . soon. And, more time for wellness, wellbeing, coaching and positive psychology - I am excited about that, too. WELLBEING!
