Surviving the breakdown

By November 24, 2010 - 6:14am

My mother and her brother both have schizophrenia. My uncle functions at a 10 year old's level (not sure why) and has lived in an assisted living facility for the last 30 years. But my mother has been "functional". She's been hospitalized 3 (maybe a 4th?) times when I was a child. Then her and my father divorced when I was 13, and we had a long distance relationship. We now live close to each other, and it's toxic. And now she's recently started to say things that set off my "schizophrenia radar" and when I relay them to my dad, he says that's word-for-word the stuff she would say when she was heading into a schizophrenic psychosis. So I'm preparing for this, but I was always pretty well sheltered when it happened when I was a kid and now I'm getting a lot of it directed at me. How to survive intact?

Hi shelliz,

Sorry to hear this. I know it must not be easy dealing with a mother with schizophrenia.  But it's important to be supported and family members should always seek for programs and therapy that can help in social support.  Also, it's important to make sure they stick to their treatments.  It might be also good for you to get Psychotherapy, which it might help you in coping with schizophrenia.
