What really works when it comes down to slowing or preventing the possibilty of fibriods??

There are many options for treatment of fibroids, and "what works" depends on the size, quantity, location as well as other individual factors that only you and your doctor are privy to.
Many women have fibroids, and have them successfully treated...that's the good news!

Some women are able to successfully conceive, carry and deliver a healthy baby with fibroids. Other women will need their fibroids treated if they are having fertility problems.

As far as I know fibroids are growths that can impede implantation of sperm or harm the baby if they are in a bad position near the uterus.

It depends on individual. My friend was 37 years old when she became pregnant without knowing, after two months she found out. When she went to the hospital for scan they told her she had two fibroids in opposite dircetions while the baby is in the middle. It was not easy for her but she finally gave birth to a baby boy and this year she is 39 years and is pregnant again, still the fibroid is there and the husband is in his early 50s. This is just luck.
