8 Debunked Myths About Oral Health

By February 24, 2025 - 1:19am

Over time, misconceptions about dental care and teeth cleaning are passed down, and if they are carried on to the end, we risk doing severe damage and ruining our smile. Here is a list of eight common myths to debunk that are unfortunately still very common and that you should always keep in mind.

Myth 1. Brushing your teeth too often is bad
Never before has a belief been so wrong. You should always brush your teeth at least two times a day, after meals, using a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. The bacteria in your mouth multiply constantly, and if you don’t remove them regularly, they can affect your oral health.

Myth 2. Only go to the dentist when you have a toothache
That is wrong because the saying "prevention is better than cure" applies to teeth as well. It is much less invasive to treat a problem such as gum disease, cavity, or other oral issues without pain rather than to intervene when the situation becomes complicated. This applies to dental checkups throughout the year.

Myth 3. Teeth and gum problems are hereditary
There is some truth in this theory. A hereditary component can affect orthodontics and malocclusion but not other oral issues. Thanks to modern medical experience and new technologies, it is possible to prevent and solve even serious hereditary problems today. Also, there is no clear evidence that parents who have always had healthy teeth will suffer the same fate for their children. Oral health always depends on how much we control it and how much we take care of it.

Myth 4. Teeth whitening damages teeth
The answer is definitely yes to DIY teeth whitening using hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, etc. However, this claim must also be disputed if we are referring to the contemporary methods that dentists use when they mention "whitening." What counts is the bleach's active component and how long it lasts. There is nothing to worry about if you get a professional teeth whitening procedure performed in a certified dental clinic.

Myth 5. Tooth enamel can regenerate
Unfortunately, this is not true. Tooth enamel is composed of calcium and organic fibers and is the hardest substance in our body. However, our diet and bad habits can make the situation worse over time. The acidity of some foods, the use of aggressive toothpaste, aggressive tooth brushing, and some eating disorders (for example, bulimia) can worsen the condition.

Myth 6. There is no need to worry about baby teeth
Many parents deliberately neglect baby teeth, knowing that they are not permanent. This choice is based on a general lack of subject knowledge. In fact, not everyone knows that untreated cavities can be transferred from a baby tooth to a permanent tooth. If the baby tooth is not treated and falls out prematurely, it can also lead to chewing problems and irregular development of the remaining teeth.

Myth 7. Adults can't wear braces
It is wrong to associate using orthodontic appliances only with children and teenagers. If it is necessary to correct an irregular bite or the arrangement of teeth, orthodontic appliances are used regardless of the patient's age. Depending on the severity of the case, the dentist will suggest the most appropriate method.

Myth 8. Bleeding gums are normal
It is not normal for the gums to bleed while brushing. If this happens, there is an infection, so it is advisable to visit the dentist for a check-up. Neglected gums can also lead to serious periodontal problems, so it is better to make an appointment with a dentist ASAP.
