Once you've collected your first billion cookies, a tiny, white circular with a seed-like appearance will start to form on your screen beneath the Stats button. Your sugar lumps are produced by this "plant," which will progressively create more lumps. Whether or not these lumps are mature or ripe when they are harvested determines the results.

You can harvest a mature Sugar Lump by clicking on it, however doing so only has a 50% chance of yielding a lump. You can attempt an unsuccessful harvest an infinite number of times by refreshing Cookie Clicker's browser tab if the game hasn't been saved after the harvest. On the other hand, a matured lump will always fall to the bottom of the screen and gather itself.

Each of the five varieties of sugar lumps has a distinct value, appearance, and particular effect. For example, when harvested, a Normal Sugar Lump will only produce one lump, whereas Bifurcated Sugar Lump has a 50% chance of producing two, Caramelized Sugar Lump has the potential to produce up to three, and Golden Sugar Lump has the potential to produce anywhere between two and seven while also tripling your current number of cookies. With the exception of the Meaty Sugar Lump, which can only emerge during the Grandmapocalypse, the chances that any of the remaining four lumps will spawn is determined by chance.

It would be an understatement to say that these tumors appear gradually. A freshly "seeded" cookie clicker takes 43 hours to ripen or 20 real-world hours to mature. This growth will continue all day long, even if the game is closed.
