Why Our Self-perception Is Different From the Way Others See Us

By April 6, 2026 - 5:41pm

There is a subtle moment that many people experience quite often. Nothing dramatic happens; it feels like any other day. However, it is the way you perceive your reflection in the mirror for the first time, or the reaction to an unexpected photograph.

Sometimes, you let those thoughts go, while at other times, you dwell upon them and analyze. Usually, nothing really changes after such a realization, but one thing is different.

Instead of accepting yourself fully, now you perceive yourself differently.

This is an interesting phenomenon to observe since, generally, such realizations do not occur on their own. They are provoked by some external factors. A single comment or an opinion, perhaps even a silence can become a source of that new perspective that you adopt.

The most disturbing thing about this process is that once you start perceiving your body according to someone else's opinions and preferences, you find it hard to stop.

Often enough, people assume that their perception of themselves is entirely individual. This means that they shape it by themselves, based on personal beliefs and thoughts. However, this assumption could not be farther from the truth. The way we see ourselves is usually heavily influenced by the outside world.

That is when things get confusing. When you start believing that the voice coming from your mind does not belong to you anymore, it is too late.

For years, I believed that feeling uncomfortable about myself was something normal that everyone experienced and did not talk about. I thought this issue required no explanation and no special measures to solve.

However, lately, I found myself observing the situation and noticed a trend.

The negative feelings were not present all the time. They seemed to appear after specific events, interactions with other people, and so on. In other words, there were certain triggers that made me perceive my body in a certain way.

This observation changed the perspective considerably. Now, when facing a negative reaction towards yourself, one should understand what causes it.

There is a great difference between searching for flaws in oneself and looking for the root cause of the problem.

In order to understand how much power people give to reactions and public opinion, one should take a look at the recent case described on worldfashionnews.com. A single image of a bikini that received much criticism turned into something to defend in just a matter of time.

This event remains in one's memory for its peculiar ability to illustrate how fragile perceptions can be. It shows that the person depicted in the picture remained the same along with her surroundings, but what happened to her and her perception was completely different.

Thinking about this example makes another question arise:

Is this phenomenon applicable only to a large community of people?

Or, in reality, it takes place inside our minds as well, but we fail to notice it.

Here, the importance of self-awareness should be emphasized.

Self-awareness in this context is not aimed at fixing the existing problems but rather at analyzing the roots of a person's self-perception.

Since the reality is that not every opinion we hold about ourselves is a personal creation, it is vital to understand that they may become echoes of some discussions and beliefs we heard before.

Identifying these echoes is crucial for further improvement and development. Of course, self-awareness does not lead to the instant change of your opinions and feelings. It provides an opportunity to question them.

It offers a chance to look into your thoughts from a different angle. A chance to ask yourself where this self-perception originated from.

Maybe then, your perception would evolve in a better direction.
