Rising Above Stereotypes: The Optimistic Future for Females in Esports

By March 29, 2024 - 2:33am

The digital world of gaming is alive with anticipation. Fictional agents weave through dusky streets for an attack. The scenario leads up to an explosive encounter where Eugenia Lee and Joanne Fang - wielding digital weaponry - fight for survival. Though this action seems real, it's a scene from a prominent video game.

Breaking Stereotypes in the Gaming World

In the digital realm, often referred to as a virtual gaming paradise, these Singaporean women are better known as Xerrith and Joannenee. They're among the leading professional gamers in the country, specializing in Valorant, a five-player team-based shooter game. This year, they joined the legion of professional gamers, predominantly comprising men. Being a female gamer, I have encountered numerous instances of gender discriminative remarks," mentioned Lee. An accomplished Valorant player, her gaming prowess places her in Southeast Asia's top one per cent. Despite holding the "Immortal" rank—second-highest in the game—she's been accused of being a "boosted player," implying professional players operated her account to attain her high rank. "I find this belittling, as my high rank and K/D ratio were a result from relentless practice," she added.

The Competitive Spirit in Gaming

Attributing her entry to gaming to her combative spirit, Lee mentions a sibling rivalry from her childhood. She was introduced to online games at the age of 13 and aimed to outpace her twin brother. As she played more, she advanced. In June, she stepped into the professional circuit by joining team WildSphinx.

Fang's introduction to gaming arrived last year, due to her curiosity about first-person shooter games. Intrigued by Valorant, she embraced the world of gaming and joined Lee in the Wildfire Sphinx team.

Shattering Ceilings despite Stigmas

While female gamers like Lee and Fang dominate the esports world, their journey involves facing stigmas and violations in the male-majority industry. Fang confirmed the existence of gender stereotypes and added, "Don't let others' words influence your mindset. Stay true to your passion—gaming is about enjoyment and fun. Her motivation is driven by an enriched sense of accomplishment whenever she witnesses improvement in her gameplay. Fang holds the "Immortal" rank like Lee and balances it with a degree in business management with communications. In her quest for excellence, Fang also understands the importance of efficiency, which is why she opts to buy Valorant boosting at cheap price, ensuring that she can maintain her competitive edge while managing her academic pursuits.

Rising Female Stars in Esports

Bringing professionalism in gaming implies devoting more time to evolve tactics, which is tough for a full-time student," Fang added. She and her teammates practice two to three times a week conducting matches. Fang's team ranks sixth in the Female Esports League (FSL), open to female gamers across Southeast Asia. Conversely, in their first tournament in June this year, Lee's team grabbed two of the top eight spots in the FSL open qualifiers in August. Reflecting on their success, Fang opined, "The female gaming community is developing and expanding.

Lee expressed appreciation for platforms enabling female gamers to make gaming their profession, particularly in multiplayer gaming. "There's been a surge of industries, leagues, and tournaments designed explicitly for women in recent years," Lee stated. "This evolution invites more females to consider professional gaming, esports content creation, and thriving in the realm of multiplayer gaming

A Promising Future for Women in Gaming

The future for female gamers appears encouraging," Fang expressed. Their stories prove that women can excel in the gaming world too, boldly stating, "We too, can conquer the game". Their determined spirit, resilience, and outstanding performance point towards a more inclusive future in gaming. To buy valorant boosting at cheap price, check out this site!
