4 Strange Types of Headaches
Headache is a real problem because it affects the quality of life. It’s not easy to get rid of it because you first need to know what type of headache you actually have. The best way out is to describe all the symptoms (what kind of pain do you experience, where is it located and is it permanent or periodic) to your doctor. Only then can he determine the type of headache you have and help you.
But as for the causes of headaches, no one knows exactly. We know much more than 20 years ago about headaches and which areas of the brain cause pain, but we still don’t have a complete picture. We have chosen four types of strange headaches, their causes and ways to get rid of them.
1. Dental headaches
There are some tooth-related conditions that can cause headaches or facial pain, such as bruxism (gnashing of teeth) and a temporomandibular joint disorder. For example, TMJD affects the facial joints which are located directly in front of your ear and connect your jaw to the skull. This disease can be caused by:
- poor jaw alignment
- stress
- poor posture
- arthritis that affects cartilage, muscles, or ligaments in the jaw
Make an appointment with a dentist in order to get the correct diagnosis. Headache treatment methods usually include jaw stretching, hot or cold compresses, stress relief, and bite protectors.
2. Caffeine headaches
If you are fond of coffee due to its ability to make you feel better, it can play a cruel joke with you. When you drink a cup of coffee every day at a certain time and suddenly miss the traditional time, you may get a severe headache because of the lack of caffeine in the body. The risk to get this type of headache increases when you drink a lot of coffee. In this case, you will feel caffeine withdrawal if you skip a cup or two.
You have two possible options. You can continue to drink your usual amount of coffee and remain caffeine-addicted or you may stop to consume gallons of coffee, survive the torment and forget about these headaches forever.
3. Orgasm headaches
It’s actually a tautology, but orgasm headaches are caused by the presence of an orgasm. Fortunately, they are comparatively rare and mainly affect young people, especially men. This type of headache usually begins after the onset of sexual intercourse and ends with a headache at the climax.
Orgasm headache can often last for hours or even days. There are no identified causes of these headaches and they usually go away without any intervention. However, it is recommended to visit a doctor. This pain, in rare cases, can be a symptom of something much more serious. A painkiller before sexual intercourse can help relieve the pain.
4. Ice cream headache
Ice cream headache is also known as brain freezes. It is a type of head pain that occurs when you have an ice-cold drink or food on a hot day. Despite the fact that almost everyone can get it, people with migraines are more likely to have this headache.
In the medical world, this ice-cream headache has an impressive name, sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia. But it is not as serious as it sounds. The pain occurs because the feeling of cold in the mouth can increase the blood flow to one of the arteries in the brain. There is no special treatment for this headache. If you suddenly feel pain from cold foods or drinks, take an instant break or drink some warm water to help suppress cold and narrow the artery.
