Dr. Holick explains the new research being conducted with vitamin D.
Dr. Holick:
Well, we know that there’s now a lot of interest in vitamin D research, so there are studies now looking at if the role of vitamin D again in preventing upper respiratory tract infections. Now with the swine flu scare, is it possible that just correcting vitamin D deficiency could decrease your risk of actually acquiring the flu because, you know, we think maybe this coming fall, it may become a big issue again, and so I think that it behooves all of us to be aware of our vitamin D status.

Michael Holick, Ph.D., M.D., is the Professor of Medicine of Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and performed his residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Holick specializes in vitamin D, calcium, bone metabolism, photobiology of vitamin, and osteoporosis. Dr. Holick is also the recipient of the American Skin Associations Psoriasis Research Achievement Award, the American College of Nutrition Award, the Robert H.
