I remember my seventh grade when my best friend saved me from humiliation when the guy I liked ignored me at the college disco. There are so many awesome and important things about having a good girlfriend. Friendship is something more than just having someone to watch Supernatural for 10 million times. This is a way to get through tears and laughs of your life.
However, there is no doubt that the role of friendship changes in your life as well as you do. Friendship evolves. It is not the same when you are twenty and when you are thirty…
When you are twenty
Your safe and careless life at college is over, and not meeting your friends every day of the week feels like being in an utter desertion. Your girls still call you constantly, but you slowly realize that you can never go back to those sweet times when your biggest problem was choosing costumes for a Halloween party.
When you are enjoying your adulthood, you aim to date as many men as humanly possible. At that time, you figure out some things you don’t want in men and then discuss these findings with your girlfriends over cocktails. You compare your experiences, share stories of guys behaving badly and having your time. As a door to your apartment keeps welcoming new faces, your girls and their familiar jokes about what is happening are essential in your life.
When you are in your late twenties, those short-skirted, wild nights in clubs gradually become sweet memories reserved in the photo albums of your Facebook. Instead of making trips to all-night dances at the disco, you start spending your “fun time” visiting their weddings.
When you are thirty
Occasional crazy nights are still present in your life, but now your location is your friend’s apartment because the idea of spending even ten minutes in a loud bar seems to be a fate worse than hell.
Now you have finally mastered the art of paying bills, and it brings you confidence in all the aspects of your life. Financial security means that you can take your girls to the regular out-of-town trips, splurge on massages and spa, and you are no longer sleeping five to one room.
Now your reality changes due to the fact that your friends become moms one by one and “I can’t, I am breast feeding” appears instead of “I can’t, I am too hang over”. You no longer ask your friends whether you should get a butterfly tattoo or paint your hair red, and instead you start talking about rates on mortgages.
Now your metabolism becomes slow, but your girls are in the same boat, so it is okay to have a drink of a fresh orange juice or visit a trendy yoga class together.
Life changes, you get new priorities and new problems. Surely, good friends will always have fun together, but the sense of nostalgia and sweet sorrow will bring you back to those days of funny selfies and wild haircuts.
