What kinds of people are prone to addictions or substance abuse? Many people are susceptible to these problems, especially people who suffer from depression, low self-esteem, loneliness, excessive stress, or are in a relationship they don’t like and don’t feel they can get out of. Young people who have difficulty fitting in, are constantly under attack by bullies and peer pressure, have a lot of stress at home or are extremely unhappy with themselves are also individuals to watch for signs of possible addiction or substance abuse. An adult or teenager can start to develop a problem long before anyone really notices if the parents or spouses are unsure of what to look for; however, if a person can detect the signs early enough, they might have an easier time convincing the troubled individual to get help. People who are able to recognize it in their selves can also get help that they need as well.
There are many signs that can reveal whether a person might be suffering an addiction to something. People abusing a substance, whether it is alcohol, street drugs or prescription drugs, can be irritable, depressed most of the time, angry or even hostile, have trouble concentrating, continue drug use even though health problems are developing as a result, have trouble keeping track of anything, acting out and doing things out of the ordinary and miss school or work. People who are abusing the substance tend to put the importance of their drugs above all else, so they will often lack in a social life, put their job or schooling at risk, and will often schedule their day around the use of their drugs.
People who have a problem with substance abuse are often trying to self-medicate or find escape from the issues that are really bothering them. Getting help for these people early on can possibly help avoid a dark future because the online therapist or online counselor they see helps them to target these issues and deal with them. Anyone who has questions regarding substance abuse, believe that a loved one, or themselves, might have a substance abuse problem, should contact a therapist. Online therapy and online counseling is available to answer any questions or concerns people may have and are there to help when needed. All that is required is a quick search on the internet and a person can easily contact the online therapist over e-mail. More people are going to online therapy now because it is more convenient and easier for many people to get the help they need. The online therapists can successfully help the person find out what the issues are as well as help the patient deal with these issues properly. This way, the root of the problem is being dealt with, which has a good chance in preventing future problems with substance abuse. Sometimes all it takes for someone to get back on the right track is to talk to someone in confidence and online therapy gives a person to talk from the comfort of their own home.

Substance abuse happens to a person using substances beyond his or her body’s ability to absorb such substances and to the extent of jeopardizing one’s own biological and psychological systems

I do believe that there is such a thing. There is one person that can have one glass of wine and the next person has to have the whole bottle and continue. There has been studies to prove it and disprove it. Men with parents that have addiction problems have a higher tendency to have an addiction problem. I believe it is a disease that just like depression, needs to be cured. Hope that helps

Hi CompleteCounseling,
Is there any truth to the statement that there are addictive personalities? In the meantime, here are a few signs for parents that their child or teen may be abusing drugs:
* Change in friends.
Hanging out with a new group.
* Seclusive behavior - long periods spent in self imposed isolation.
* Long, unexplained absences.
* Lying and stealing.
* Involvement on the wrong side of the law.
* Deteriorating family relationships.
* Obvious intoxication, delirious, incoherent or unconscious.
* Changes in behavior and attitude.
* Decrease in school performance.
