Questions abound regarding dry humping, dry sex and dry intercourse. It is most often a question asked by girls and women, wanting to know if they can be pregnant when engaging in "dry sex".
The terms has been defined in many ways, depending on the person asking, and I wanted to break through the barriers and actually talk about the "embarrassing" aspects of what these terms actually mean.
What are you actually doing with your partner when you are doing anything "dry" in the sex-realm? Let's take the slang out of our questions, and talk about these taboo topics in the name of sexual health and wellness.
Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

Dear Anonymous,
I think you have completely missed the point of this article. It wasn't for you to talk about how much your wife enjoys a vibrator inside of her but to helps women who have misconceptions of pregnancy.
This isn't the place for you to post you and your wife's turn-ons so please keep the conversation professional.
Thank you,
Rosa

Also adding more info, he never ejaculate near my vaginal opening though. I'm sure pre cum seeped out but i know he peed before and he didn't ejaculate that day.

Hello, my boyfriend and I have always been dry humping but this month is really different. My fertile days were the beginning of this month (September 2-September 8. I remember giving him bjs/handjobs and sometimes when we dry hump he wears his basketball shorts and boxers and i wear my shorts and underwear. Sometimes I just wear my underwear and he wears nothing. There's no skin to skin contact because the material of my underwear is in between us. Is it possible for his pre cum to see through my underwear and into my vagina? Because he puts his penis near my vaginal opening and pushes against it (he never gets in though) but there is is no actual penetration. We have never had unprotected sex before we just foreplay. But my period is now 4 days late, my breasts feel tingly and fuller (maybe my mind is playinyg tricks on me). My nipples have not gotten darker and my nipples/aerolas have always been big and puffy but my breasts are warm. I'm also feeling very tired but that's how I feel before my period too. My boobs do not hurt all. all. Is it just me making myself go crazy and stressing so much I'm. Delaying my period or am I pregnant?

me and this girl were fooling around in bed. It started of kissing then dry humping. I cummed but I was in my underwear and she was wearing her underwear. I know you cannot get pregnant with this, but what we did next is worrying me down.
After about 20 mins after I cummed, I started to rub my penis on her labia. And we dry humped naked, but my penis wasn't even hard at this time and I did not ejaculate again. This 2nd part of my query is what is worrying me. Can she get pregnant because of this?
I cummed like I said, but that was when I was still wearing my underwear and she was wearing hers. My underwear wasn't those silky type and hers wasnt too.
Pls I just need some peace of mind that there is no chance she can get pregnant.
Just for extra information, we did this yesterday 25th Sept. I don't know her menstrual cycle so I don't know if she was fertile at the time.

If the fabric of the clothing is so sheer or mesh-like with small holes, then semen can get through those very minute openings. Otherwise, clothing will act as a barrier.

Just to be clear: if my boyfriend produces very much pre-cum or ejaculates while in his underwear with me naked, straddling him (sorry if this is vulgar)... if there's a barrier of clothing between us, even if the head of his penis is pressed into the opening of my vagina, even if his (or my) underwear feel wet or damp (and I know I would be producing bodily fluids)... semen can't pass through the clothing? Can any bodily fluid, or more specifically STIs in bodily fluids, pass through the clothing?
It's hard to know if our fluids are crossing the barrier of underwear, because, to be blunt, I'm already wet.
If what I've described *isn't* safe (and I think you're saying it is), at what point is a barrier of clothing too minimal?
Thank you!

Hi Alison!
This statement on Page 5 really helped me:
"Sperm can not penetrate through one layer of clothing."
I saw that you have a Masters degree in Health Education and Promotion, but could you please provide/ cite another [trustworthy] source supporting this?
Thank you!
