the wound was left open by the pilonidal cyst and it is being cleaned and packed and dressed every day. It's taking so long and she's fed up and wishes it would heal. Does anyone have a similar experience? Is there anything we can do to promote healing?

Dear Pat,
November 1, 2011 - 9:14amAbout 5 years ago, my daughter had a pilonidal cyst. At the time, we had no idea what it was. We went to the Urgent Care Clinic and they lanced it, drained it and packed with gauze that had to be cleaned & changed frequently. They told us then that there was a chance of recurrence. My daughter was in such pain before and during the draining, it was agonizing to see her in that much pain. It's been all this time & it's done fine. She has started having some pain again with it, and says it feels like her tailbone is bruised. I took her to the Dr today and he confirmed that it is reforming!! Now, we have no insurance and are not sure that a surgeon will accept her or not. The Dr prescribed an antibiotic in hopes that it will do some good, but wasn't very positive about that. From what I've heard and read, it usually doesn't help. We'll see. I wish they would have just done surgery the first time, when we had insurance. I sympathize with anyone who has had this or had to watch someone they love go thru this. It's just awful.
I'm just praying that the antibiotics do the trick and it goes away.

Hi there,
When I was 17, I had a pilonidol cyst and had three surgeries on it within one year, as the wound kept re-opening. We tried packing it, and stitches, but it didn't close all the way. Very frustrating, as you would imagine. I ended up seeking a new surgeon, who did a z plasty, and the wound healed and hasn't opened back up since. I'm now almost 30.
The upside, is that the cyst is gone! The downside, is that I have a nasty scar from the z plasty that I'm considering getting cosmetic surgery on, as it's literally changed the way my rear looks.
I hope your daughter has healed from this.

dear pat,
February 12, 2011 - 6:05ami had pilonidal cyst surgery two weeks ago. fortunately, the wound was not left opened as usual and it was closed and connected to a negative pressure pump to evacuate and clean the wound.the pump was removed three days after surgery. although the wound was too long and too deep but it was completely healed two weeks after surgery and now i am living my life as usual.

Thanks for sharing the rest of your story! I'm glad that you're completely healed and living life "as usual" and I hope you also took a moment to treat yourself after undergoing all that comes with having surgery. Chocolate is always wonderful in some form! :-)

Anon - I would advise you to learn as much as you can about the surgery, the recovery process and what you need to do to follow up. Your doctor's office should be providing you with information, and you can also learn more here: https://www.empowher.com/pilonidal-cyst/content/pilonidal-cysts
and from this support group: http://www.pilonidal.org/
Let us know how your surgery goes, and all the best to you.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. I am currently dealing with the same problem. I had a pilonidal cyst on my rear end and they had to create a small incision to drain the pus. I have had to go to the hospitals specialty clinic everyday to have them clean it and repack it. One of the nurses told me one way to help heal it was to eat a lot of protein, so I did. It's almost closed and now I'm scheduled to have the Z-plasty surgery to remove all the tissue around the cyst so it will hopefully not come back again. That's also another idea because I knew I could never go through this again. Hope your daughter gets better soon and tell her that it does get better. Just keep your hopes high. :)

Pat,
November 2, 2010 - 4:18pmSince I only had the cyst drained and not actually removed it is till there with risk of abscessing again. Just this past month I began having pain in the area again and returned to my doctor. Here to find out another cyst and sinus had formed and was beginning to become infected but had not abscessed yet. Luckily we caught it in time and were able to treat it with high frequent doses of antibiotics. My doctor thinks I need to have both cysts removed but I have still not made a decision. Looking into being referred to a colorectal specialists for this problem.
