Because the lines that define and distinguish the differences between urology and gynecology can sometime be nebulous, it can be difficult, at times, for women to determine when to consult their OB/GYN and when to see a urologist. While the OB/GYN plays an invaluable role in supporting the health of women, there are times in which a urologist is best suited to help women deal with certain specific conditions. Urologists are trained to treat conditions that are associated with the urinary tract and the kidneys.
Women Need Urologists Too
Due to the fact that urologists treat men for male-centered conditions, such as those associated with the prostate, many people postulate that they only specialize in treating men; however, the fact that they focus on the urinary tract, and a number of other systems, muscles, tubes and organs, including the kidneys, illuminate the fact that urologists can be just as beneficial for women as they are for men.
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
Recurring urinary tract infections can be an issue with some women, and although they can often be treated by the OB/GYN, it is possible that a urological clinic specializing in urinary tract infections may be more equipped to help them identify the source of the recurrent infections. By identifying the source of the urinary tract infection, it may be possible to eliminate the recurring condition all together.
Urinary Incontinence
As women age, they can develop what is known as urinary incontinence, the inability to control their bladder, which can lead to some embarrassing moments. Urologists focus on all issues that involve the urinary tract, so urinary incontinence would fall under their umbrella of expertise. In addition to treating urinary incontinence, urologists also treat overactive bladders, which become more common as women age.
Sexual Dysfunction
The term "sexual dysfunction" is often associated with men; with erectile dysfunction being the primary culprit; however, women also suffer from sexual dysfunction in a number of different ways. Women can suffer from a low libido, which can significantly curb their desire for sex with their mate. They can also struggle with abnormal pain during sexual intercourse -- a condition that is most common during and after menopause. By visiting a urologist, a woman can have these types of conditions diagnosed and treated.
Cancers Associated with the Urinary Tract
There are a number of different cancers that are associated with the urinary tract and related organs, including kidney cancer and bladder cancer. Urologists are trained to effectively treat these specific conditions, and they can be instrumental in the early detection of these diseases, which is immensely important to survival and long-term health.
Women should make it a point to visit their OB/GYN on a regular basis, the services that they provide are essential to female health, especially when it involves the reproductive system. However, women should not ignore the obvious benefits of seeing a urologist.
