Hello empowher.com community, I’m Rebecca! I was recently moved to join the community as a blogger when I heard the founder Michelle King Robson’s profound story at an AWEE luncheon. She shared her personal story about why she decided to start this site. I loved the idea of women helping women, I loved the idea of sharing stories, advice etc about living a healthier life, I loved that this is a place where you can help yourself, or you can help others. I wanted to bring my personal experience to the empowher.com community - the insight, advice, ideas, etc from my Bicyclette.com community. At Bicyclette, we are inspired by the bicycle and all of the benefits it bring us daily. We believe it’s good for your heart, soul, friends and family, and our earth. You can learn more about our philosophy here. So that brings us to this first blog post.
There are so many topics cruising through my head right now. I could talk resolutions. I could talk goals. I could share the thousands of reasons to ride a bike. I think though, that I will start with my personal story. Then in future posts, we can address topics like the above. Don’t worry - I’ll be brief and highlight my history in a bulleted list (you have a lot to do after all!):
- Grew up in an active household
- As a teenager, both parents received medical news that helped us to become more aware about how to live a heart healthy life both through physical activity and nutrition
- In my 20s, became less active but still stayed the course with my eating habits - and became a migraine sufferer
- In my early 30s, literally became addicted to Coca Cola. Gained 30 pounds. Kicked the habit, lost 30 pounds.
- In my late 30s, experienced friends going through things like quadruple bypass surgery, cancer/scares, terrible surgery experiences, etc
- And had my own freak near death experience which landed me on the kidney floor of a hospital - saw first hand the results of diabetes
All of these experiences shaped my attitude towards the importance of living a healthy life. When I was exploring ideas for my new company, I knew the ability to impact lives had to be built into the mission. It’s my goal to share stories, research, advice and tips that can help each one of us build the importance of living a healthy life into our own personal missions. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to see from this blog as we go along in our journey - please feel free to share your ideas! Next up on the blog side of things, I will be collaborating with of a few of my favorite health experts on their vision for a healthy life. See you again soon!
