Here's an alternative that wasn't mentioned:
If you walk or run, engage your lower abs, tuck your pelvis, breathe from your diaphragm. Be conscious of trying to hold this posture for 20-30 minutes and you'll probably feel a bit sore. But, not only will you be in proper, straight posture during your workout, you'll be tightening those abs without doing crunches!

This was interesting; I enjoy reading tips that are easy to implement (and, many that we are likely already doing) that are more effective.
My favorite: instead of traditional crunches, the pilates move is more effective at reaching 39% more of your abs (making a V shape with your legs and arms; bottom on the mat, then slowly lowering your legs and torso to the mat).
