The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not recognized by the AMA and does not certifty the most highly qualified cosmetic plastic surgeons. Patients instead should look by certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and -- for cosmetic surgeons who specialize in procedures of the head and neck -- cosmetic plastic surgeons who are certified by the The American Board of Otolaryngology. Those surgeons have an extra four to six years of training after the M.D. degree. But with a ticket from The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, a surgeon can go right into cosmetic surgery with only the M.D. degree.
