I will be laying in bed and my toe will randomly cramp up for a good 2-3 minutes. Why does it do that? Is this a vitamin deficiency?

Hi saradietz!

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community! Oh those darn toe cramps-the ones that wake you from even the most restful sleep! I have them from time to time too!

Our feet sure take a beating, after-all they carry the whole weight of our bodies all day long! The cramps you are experiencing are more of a nuisance than something to be too worried about!

A vitamin D deficiency can lead to toe cramps, however in most cases, cramps are due to fatigue or stress on the foot. Not getting enough water or nutrients can lead to foot spasms.

saradietz, be sure to eat properly and get enough vitamins and minerals. If the symptoms persist or keep you up at night and you are losing sleep, it might be time to call a Podiatrist. Otherwise, if it is just an ocassional cramp, I would focus on making sure you are getting enough vitamin D in your diet or taking a supplement.

Here's a great article on vitamin D deficiency you might find interesting. https://www.empowher.com/media/reference/vitamin-d-deficiency

Are you getting enough vitamin D in your diet or taking a multi-vitamin? Does this help saradietz?

Best,

Kristin
