Why are my thumbnails becoming flat?

fingernail ridges

I used to have perfectly rounded fingernails across my nail bed, but have noticed over the years that my thumbnails are becoming flat. Am I not eating enough protein? What is causing this? It's been happening for about two years.

I've always been a nail biter. Very bad nervous habit. My nailare all flat. The pointer and middle being the flattest. I think it may have something to do with nail biting in my case. The first and middle finger nails also curl up at the edges.

I have had nail issues for the past few years... I had little white lines on them, they were getting flat, breaking easily. Your nails show signs of your body's overall health. I started eating better, taking a multivitamin with probiotics in it, drinking a lot more water, and now I am on a supplement called Biosil just for healthy hair skin & nails. My nails, hair, and skin are all looking a lot better I am also feeling a lot better (just healthier, more energy) as well. I would recommend that you have a dr look at them. If it's not serious, then start making changes like I did and you will see results fast. I have only been doing this for 2-3 months. For ladies- stop wearing nail polish if you do all the time. Put a layer of coconut oil on them and let them breathe for a while. For guys and ladies- getting your essential vitamins & minerals everyday is so important. If you struggle with eating veggies I would suggest a protein shake or smoothie that contains all of them. I am taking mass gainer everyday which adds 1000 calories to my diet (yes I am a lady trying to gain weight) plus has everything I need in it. Remember that if something is off your body is always trying to tell you regardless if it's sporadic rashes, acne, canker sores, hair falling out, always tired.... Or your symptoms could be worse. Get in tune with your body and good luck!

I'm 15 years old and both of my pointer fingernails and both of my middle fingernails are flat. My dads fingernails are all flat, his fathers fingernail are flat and so are my brothers. I do think think that some possibility is genetics.

I'm wondering if all the young people in this thread, with flattening thumbnails do a lot of thumb-texting? I would expect all the frequent pressure on the thumbtips to cause some flattening of the nail bed.

I'm having same thing. I do take vitamins but have had issues absorbing B12, calcium and iron. My nails look slightly different especially my thumbs --flattened, not the usual slight curve.

I am 51 and over the past 10 years, I've noticed my thumbnails are flattening, also. My thumbnails used to be stronger and grew much more easily than the rest of my fingernails. Now, it is opposite: my thumbnails have flattened ..you can see and feel the flattened area. The nail also separates into two layers if they do manage to grow beyond the quick. I wonder if this is due to some kind of nutritional deficiency.

i'm menopausal for 8 years, and now diagnosed with osteoporosis and my usually indestructible nails ar suddenly turning up slightly at the side edges, enough to cause a snag. nails looking a little flatter at the tips too. i have a good diet and don't usually take vitamins and mineral supplements. maybe i should start?
