Hi Jessica, and thanks for your question.
The appropriate vitamins and supplements for any individual, vegan or not, depend on their personal health history and their personal lifestyle including their diet.
For example, Vitamin D deficiencies are very common in women, and become more so as we age. Determining whether one is deficient in Vitamin D takes a specific blood test. One can then determine, with their physician, if the best way to get sufficient Vitamin D is through diet or supplements or a combination of the two. In some cases the recommended level of supplementation may be far higher than that found on "official" recommendations due to the person's medical history and other factors. In short, doing this well means taking a personalized approach.
In terms of some general guidelines for vegans, which can be adapted to an individual, I suggest reviewing "Nutrient Recommendations for Vegans" by Jack Norris, RD and Ginny Messina, MPH, RD, authors of Vegan for Life.
Are you a vegan or considering becoming one? What's prompting this question, and do you have any suggestions or recommendations to give to others? Let us know.
Best regards,
Pat
