Q:

What does it mean when you get diarrhoea at the time your period is due, instead of your period

I got cramps and thought my period was gonna come but it turned out to be diarrhoea. What does this mean? Will it delay my period? If so, by how much time?

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community!

Getting diarrhea instead of your period can happen for several reasons. Some women experience diarrhea when they are on their period. The exact reasoning behind this is uncertain, but some believe it is tied to menstrual cramps.

Our bowel movements may change due to hormonal changes in our bodies, which can happen during your menstrual cycle.

For now, I would wait a few days to see if your period comes. Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms can sometimes happen the week leading up to your period. The diarrhea can simply be a symptom related to PMS.

Women's periods can fluctuate from time to time. I would keep an eye out to see if you have more diarrhea and write down when your period comes this month. If you are concerned about pregnancy, the best thing to do is to take a pregnancy test.

I hope this helped!

Best,
Erin
