Another is something called post nasal drip. Excess mucus production causes post nasal drip. The treatment will depend on the cause of the excess mucus production.

If it's caused by a bacterial infection then antibiotics are used for treatment. If its caused by a virus or sinusitis or allergies, then antihistamines and decongestants are helpful, as well as nasal sprays. In some cases the use of steroid medications may be necessary.

Additional options for relief include the use of mucus-thinning medications and/or using a nasal irrigation tool such as a neti pot which flushes out the mucus. Using a humidifier or vaporizer to increase moisture in the air can also help.

Finally, it can help to learn more about the root cause of the post nasal drip and take steps to prevent it. For example, if the cause is allergies, then taking steps to combat allergic reactions could help.
