Q:

Vaginal Dryness?

I'm only recently turned 21 and in the past two to three years I've had a hard time self lubricating despite how aroused I get. I experienced a miscarriage at 18, had a d&c, and ever since then I haven't been able to self lubricate. No amount of foreplay has helped and I've tried using store-bought lube, but it doesn't help for long and constantly having to stop just to reapply is a huge turn off unfortunately. I know that I should see a healthcare provider about this, but at the moment that isn't an option and I'd like to see what someone has to say about it, or if this is a common thing.

Hello. Thank you for writing.

Normally, the walls of the vagina stay lubricated with a thin layer of clear fluid. The hormone estrogen helps maintain that fluid and keeps the lining of the vagina healthy, thick, and elastic. Any burning, itching or discomfort in the vaginal area should be checked by a gynecologist. The doctor will take a health history and find out how long you've been experiencing symptoms and whether anything -- such as douching or taking medication -- seems to worsen them.
