Q:

Tanning beds without a bathing suit bad for breasts?

Recently I've thought about going to a tanning salon for the first time because of the gloomy summer weather and the fact I can't get out much because of work. I won't be excessively tanning, only 1-3 15 minute sessions, but I'm curious to know if it's safe to go 100% nude while tanning. In particular, is it dangerous to tan your breasts? Can your nipples burn more easily/faster than the surrounding skin?

I know better than to tan in the bed but might if my skin would actually tan! I am VERY fair-skinned naturally but no one would know it because I use MysticTan. Sure, "spray tans" have the ugly reputation of being orange, streaky and smelly, but they're not anymore! I have a Palm Beach Tan membership with unlimited MysticTans and couldn't be happier. Other salons offer MysticTan too. The only thing about them is that you have to keep going regularly (every 4-5 days or so if you want to maintain a natural-looking tan). Applying the barrier lotion takes a little practice, but you quickly get the hang of it. Forget putting lotions on yourself...stay away from the beds...I highly recommend MysticTan!!

If you want to tan using lotions, spray tans, or the like, live it up. But Do Not go to a tanning bed! New studies have lead to research to confirm that tanning at a salon can cause up to a 75% higher risk for skin cancer than what the average person is already prone to.

Save your life and your skin and stay away from the tanning beds!

I was recently in my dermatologist's office and I saw a poster on her wall that said something like: "What is leather? Skin. How do you turn skin into leather? Tan it." That seemed to sum it all up. Don't tan if you don't want leathery skin.

I've never tried self tanners before, and only a couple of my friends have tried--both had nasty results with streaking and orange coloration. It's really good to hear about the products that work, since it's not something I'd like to experiment much with. Tan towel does sound like a good product, especially since it's non-streaking. I didn't know that one towel covers the whole body; the site didn't really clarify that, I was worried that the 5 packs were for one application. But I'd appreciate any other recommendation you have, thank you!

There are lotions that work really well and give you a nice glow too. Let me see if I can contact my girlfriend and get the name of the one she uses. It may be less expensive then the tan towel. You only need one tan towel to cover your entire body and it lasts for days. My legs look just as tan today as they did on Friday night. The other thing I like about the tan towel, it doesn't streak. It gives you a nice even tan. I will check on the other product for you though. I did try it a couple weeks ago when I was in San Diego and it worked really well. My girlfriend swears by it. What is it with our partners wanting us to be tan? Sometimes I think, they think, tan equals pretty and sexy....Oh boy, do they have a lot to learn!!! Thanks for coming to EmpowHer. You asked a great question!!

Thanks for the very helpful comment Michelle! Actually, it's funny that you should mention your husband's nagging, because that is the very situation with my own partner constantly saying I need more of a tan. I suppose when you think of the wrinkled, brown, old ladies who tanned frequently in their younger years, to appeal to my partner is not worth it. I don't suppose he'll be happy if I turn into one of those grisly gals twenty years from now. Thanks for the suggestion on the tan towel, I'm looking on the site now. A bit expensive, but a much better alternative!

Ok..I just went and looked it up. It's called www.tantowel.com. I get the one for fair to medium skin tone. As a matter of fact, I just used it this weekend. I keep them in my make up/travel bag. A girl never knows...it's nice to be prepared. We were invited to several parties in Chicago this weekend. Friday night, I decided to wear a dress but my legs were as white as the driven snow. I used my tan towel about an hour before we left for the party and my husband said, what is that thing you're using on your legs? I told him what it was and within a few hours he commented on how great my legs looked. Even he was impressed with the tan towel and the natural color it gave me.

And why do you want to expose any part of your body to a tanning bed??? I'm sorry if I sound abrupt or condescending. I really don't mean to be...I promise. I'm just willing to bet you look great in a suit without a tan, and quite frankly, when you get to be my age you'll look better everywhere, including your face, if you stay out of the tanning booths and sun now. Sounds like you don't get out in the sun much....that's a good thing!!

My husband used to nag me all the time about getting out and getting some sun. He loves a tan body. I say, love it all you want on someone else until they're about 35 and then you won't love it so much anymore. Then, just wait till there 5o. It's so not pretty.

If I want to have a little color on my legs and arms, I use a product called tanning towel. It's great and it's so easy to use. It also doesn't give you that horrible orange color so many men and women have when they use tanning lotions. I believe the website is www.tanningtowel.com. Let me know if that's not it.

Please, please, please .... step away from the tanning bed. You don't need it. Trust me.

Best in health,
Michelle
