Q:

Strange Bump on the roof of my Mouth

Can someone help me?

For two days, I had this strange bump on the roof of my mouth (hard palate). Since it started to hurt, I started to research what it might be and when I touched it to feel if it was hard, it popped like a zit. The only thing that came out of it was pure white (not clear) just as if you popped a zit on your face.

So now that I have popped this unknown bump, I am afraid of what in the world it is. It is still very sore but less annoying as it is no longer a big as it was. I would guess it was about the size of a medium zit on your face to compare.

Can anyone help me? I looked up several dental sites but merely mention Mucoceles but these are painless and this one random bump is very painful and clearly zit-like.

Any ideas?

Anon - Here's when you need to worry about mouth bumps:
* if they get bigger
* if they bleed
* if they last longer than one or two weeks
* if they are painful
Hopefully yours will go away soon, but if not, please seek care. Pat

Hi Anonymous,

I had one of those before and it probably is nothing to worry about. I actually cut the roof of my mouth eating something hard and next thing I knew, there was a zit looking thing there. Wash your mouth out with mouthwash and/or salt water at least six times a day and it should be gone in a couple days. If not, they go make an appointment with your Dentist.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thank you for that suggestion because I have an odd bump
and I've been looking into it and a lot of people keep throwing around the word cancer, a little mouthwash/salt-water sounds a tad bit better seeing how I'm not a smoker, I just hope it goes away soon!

Thanks for the information. I am a smoker but I looked at the pictures from this website that was pretty unhelpful since there are no zit like pictures as I have but might be helpful to others http://www.doctorspiller.com/sores_lumps_bumps.htm.

I could never be a Dentist looking at some of these things. Anyhow, thanks for trying. I will keep you updated. Maybe it was just something that I ate that caused the zit. Who knows!

Hi Anonymous

Do you smoke? Sometimes smokers get benign sores in their mouths like this, but they can also get mouth cancer. If you smoke or chew tobacco or anything like that, I recommend you see your doctor as soon as possible. We have a page on oral conditions that may help you: https://www.empowher.com/condition/oral-conditions

It is possible that you ate something that poked you and a little bacteria got in there and you had a little abscess, which is technically what a pimple is. But there are also some health conditions that can cause little mouth sores, such as Lichen Planus or thrush, for instance.

I think it is a good idea to see your primary provider or a dentist because this is bothering you, painful, and new to you. This way you can rule out infection or any other medical problem. Odds are since there is only one it is nothing dangerous, but I'm a member of the better safe than sorry nurse club.

Good luck, and please let us know the outcome. It will help others.

People who don't smoke get them as well... I've never smoked and had one checked out just today...

I am a man and I have a bump on the roof of my mouth. I recently sucked a penis and he ejaculated in my mouth and I am wondering if this is an STD. Should I be worried?
