I read an article today about a breakthrough study in schizophrenia. The study said that schizophrenia is more complex than a lot of people thought, and that it is really eight disorders, not just one. Could you tell me some more about this study?

Hi Ali,

Thank you so much for sharing your question and bringing up this study! I went online and found the press release from Washington University in St. Louis where the research was done- https://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/27358.aspx

According to the research, yes, Schizophrenia is not a single disease, but 8, each with its own set of symptoms. "The finding could be a first step toward improved diagnosis and treatment for the debilitating psychiatric illness," says the researchers.

Here is a link to the study from the American Journal of Psychiatry- http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/article.aspx?articleID=1882901

Improving the diagnosis and finding better ways to treat the illness is a major breakthrough!

Thank you for your question Ali!

Best,

Kristin
