(Sorry this is a little long)
So here's my situation. I am currently a few days shy of 31 weeks pregnant and for the past 3 years I have been dealing with slight vaginal irritation (more sore than itch) and I am honestly at my wits end! Let me give you the whole story...
3 years ago I woke up with severe burning and itching down there. I immediately thought yeast infection and used 2 rounds of monastat. It helped almost all the way but I was still left with a slight nagging itch that just wouldn't subside, so I went to the doctor where they diagnosed me with a yeast infection and a bacterial infection. They put me on meds for the yeast infection and an antibiotic for the bacterial infection. Well, even though I know I shouldn't have, I stopped the antibiotic before it was gone because it was making me have severe vertigo. Dummy me didn't call the doctor to tell them either because I was feeling much better. Well ever since then I get this slight irritation that just comes and hangs for several weeks (sometimes months) and then it goes away for a little bit and comes back. I have gone to the doctor again about it and they told me I had a yeast infection but that time they saw an ulcer and swabbed it for herpes. It came back negative and she had put me on the meds for a yeast infection again. (Diflucan I think is what it was called.) It helped but as soon as the meds were gone the irritation came back. I started a vaginal probiotic and it helped but then I found out I was pregnant so I stopped because I wasn't sure it was safe for baby. I talked to my doctor about it during a prenatal visit and he told me to use vagisil because it was probably just my hormones causing the irritation. Well I did and it eventually went away for a while but about 3 weeks ago it came back again and the doctor wanted to swab me again for herpes because of how it comes and goes. She told me it didn't look like herpes but just irritation and the test did come back negative. (again) At my last appt. my doctor told me he wanted to start me on Valtrex anyways at 36 weeks just in case, but my problem is I want to KNOW what the heck is going on down there! I am not convinced it's herpes because both tests came back negative and because it doesn't go away as fast as herpes are supposed to. It hangs around for a while, and comes back too quick. I am worried because I don't want to be put on Valrex and if it doesn't work then I would have to have a C-section and that terrifies the heck out of me! Especially if it's not needed. What should I do or does anyone have any ideas of what this is? I am tired of not having any actual answers. =( I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering what is going on?

Hello Anonymous,

I can appreciate your frustration at not having a definitive diagnosis and effective treatment. Also, I understand your concerns about having a C-section, if it is unnecessary.

I am not a physician and am basing my stab at what is going on based only on your symptoms.

I think you might be infected with trichimonas vaginalis, which is a protozoan parasite. Tricomoniasis is a very common sexually transmitted disease. The parasite is passed from an infected person to an uninfected person during sex.

Women with trichomoniasis may notice itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals, discomfort with urination, or a thin discharge with an unusual smell that can be clear, white, yellowish, or greenish.

My concern is this, pregnant women with trichomoniasis are more likely to have their babies too early, but luckily you are at 31 weeks. Babies born to infected mothers are more likely to have babies who weigh less than 5.5 pounds.

Trichomoniasis is diagnosed by examination with this disease in mind and by a laboratory test. It can be cured with a single dose of prescription antibiotic medication, Flagyl. But, it can reoccur if you continue to have sex with the infected person.

Hope this helps,

Maryann

I don't see how it would be that because I have only been with my husband and we have been together for 8 years and I know he has been faithful. So I'm not sure it would be that. But I appreciate your input. =)
