I had a really bad stomach ache the other day. I wasn’t really sure what had caused the belly ache but someone gave me a peppermint to settle my stomach. I never heard of peppermint for the stomach. Is this a natural remedy?

Peppermint can be good to reduce the stomach pain. But if the pain persist you can try Oil of oregano. It's a good natural medicine. Oil of oregano has this antimicrobial property that is good in treating digestive problems.

Great point by Coach Virginia -- I have pretty severe GERD and have to avoid peppermint like the plague.

Thank you so much. I had no idea that peppermint acted as a muscle relaxer for stomach pain. This was great information.

Peppermint is a member of the mint family and as such, it is also very good for certain digestive system problems. Mint acts as a muscle relaxant and can calm an overactive digestive tract. You can find it as a tea, tincture or capsules. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, use enteric-coated capsules. Just a word of caution, because peppermint relaxes the valve between the stomach and the esaphagus, it can worsen heartburn. I would not use peppermint you you are experiencing heartburn, instead you can try chamomille tea.
