So I've been having a problem with my toe and it started a while ago and I didn't tell anyone because I didn't know if it was bad or something I could deal with easily. And it's been hurting a lot and it's red and it looks swollen. It also seems like I have an ingrown toenail, but I think that if I do have a ingrown toenail that it's gone on to long so I need it surgically removed! I don't know what to do, please help me!

Hi Johnnaellison5244 and thanks for your question. There can be many reasons for a swollen and painful toe, and treatment will depend on the cause. Common causes are an injury, gout and arthritis. Could you have accidentally bumped something with your toe? Sometimes we don't notice things like that right away.  For immediate relief you can apply a cold compress which should reduce both the swelling and the pain.  If the symptoms  continue, or worsen, it would be best to see your medical provider so that he/she can determine what has caused the swelling and how to treat it. Good luck and we hope you feel better soon!

Best,

Pat
