Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

I'm sorry your son is dealing with severe acne, it's very difficult.

Accutane is generally used for up to 6 months but the medication will stay in the system for another couple of months.

Accutane has a high success rate - about 80% . But obviously this means it doesn't work for 20%. Not all medications work for all people. This may be the case with your son. One reason for it not working is taking it on an empty stomach. He absolutely has to take it with food or right after a meal. It will not work on an empty stomach.

Other medications could cause it to fail. Is he on any other meds?

Best,
Susan
