Hello, I missed my one pill sometime during week 3, the doubled up the next day, and then the last two days of week 4 my alarm failed to go off to remind me to take them, then I got my period. Once my period is over, and I go back on the pill, do I need to be on the pill for a month without sex again, or should I be fine having sex in that month? Sorry if this may be an obvious answer, but I just want to be cautious.

Dear Anon,
Once you go back on the pill you can resume sex normally-- there really is never a need to go without sex for a month. What is recommended is that the very first time you start your pack, since your body needs time to recognize and adjust to the pill, that you use a condom for the first 2 weeks. At this point it is entirely up to you if you'd like to be extra cautious and use a backup method for two weeks-- otherwise you should be fine by simply resuming your birth control pills.
A little side note on the alarm-- sometimes it helps to go back to the good ol' pen and paper method. If you have a paper calendar (like I can't seem to let go of) log in your period dates and pill times. For example, if you post your calendar somewhere in the kitchen, every morning you may be reminded to take your pill when you walk in. Write something like "BCP 9am" on it every day, then cross it out or put a check mark next to it once it actually gets done. Some people who cannot depend on their alarms will resort to this and it actually works better for them.
Good Luck!

I am taking Seasonique, and I was in the end of week 11, and I missed 2 pills, didn't realize it, and had sex. Do I need to use an emergency back up pill (like plan B).

April 3, 2010 - 11:10amWhat are the rules around borrowing pills? A lot of the people I know here are on the pill, is it a bad idea to take one of their's, not neccessarily Cilest tho?

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question. The rule of thumb is, you can miss two days of pills taking two pills on day 18 and two pills on day 19. Do not take three pills in one day. If you miss your pill for a third day, stop your pack immediately.
You should always use a back up method of protection when you miss birth control pills for at least for seven days. If you have any questions, please contact your pharmacist for any special instructions.

I'm on cilest and have been for around 3 years. Today is day 15 of 21 but I have gone away for Easter and forgotten to bring my pills meaning I will miss days 16 and 17. I can take one again on day 18. Should I take two on day 18 and two on day 19? Or 3 on day 18? Should I use extra contraception for 7 days? ie. until my pill free week starts on day 22.
OR.
Should I take my pill free week now and start day 23 as id it were day 1?
Thank you for any help!

Hi, Anon,
Missing pills during the second (and even the third) week can definitely increase your chances of becoming pregnant. That is why you are supposed to make up the pills as soon as you remember them. Did your doctor tell you this when she or he gave you the prescription?
In the future, here's what you are supposed to do, from the drugs.com entry on Trinessa:
-- When you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember the next day, and take that day's pill at the regular time.
-- When you miss two pills, take two pills for two days in a row and use backup contraception (such as a condom) for 7 days.
-- When you miss three pills, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new one that day.
If you miss two or more pills, you may not have a period during the month. If you miss a period for two months in a row, call your doctor because you might be pregnant.

Anon,
It's slightly possible, since you may have ovulated and since sperm can live in the system for up to 3 days. But since it was so late in your cycle, you're probably just fine. Do you know that when you miss a pill you need to take two pills the next day?
