INDEED you can, I use an elliptical three times a week, it is the closest thing to running, which I miss due to my ankle fusion.

Truly...thanks advance for your message.
Interesting the surgeon...intern thought not.
If you don"t mind me asking ....when did you have your surgery? and any other details of how it effects your life.
I'am living with stage 4 arthritics and the doc has recommended fusion as a TAR first recommended, changed when i told him i do miles 4 times a week on a elliptical and swim the same weekly.
I'am an active 59 year old but my ankle developed severe arthritics as a result of having my hip replaced ( other leg ) at 21. Its been great all alone however and the thought is i over compensated over the years with the pressure on the opposed leg with the ankle taking the hit.
i just got accepted for LTD and they constantly ask whats the treatment plan. i continue to say live within my means. they have given me a 2 year contract to decide. My doctor says if i was 25 pounds more i would walk. so far i can tolerate the pain. I just have given up a lot of what i did before.
kind regards
Doug

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

The answer depends on how your surgery went and how you feel now. Are you getting physical therapy?
If you have been given the go-ahead to exercise you should be fine - just make sure you stop if you feel any pain. Pain means it's time to stop and rest, don't try to push through it.
Best,
Susan

Susan... thank you for you reply and comments.
it is difficult to get any comments from a ankle fusion patience.
Currently i have decided to wait it out. I have no cartilage and the surgeon has given me 2 option(s)
ankle replacement or fusion. i"ve decided to live within my means. i got off work and the daily grind my ankle couldn't take. My activity
( extremely important ) is swimming and the use of elliptical.
I have spoken to a person with a ankle replacement and determine its not for me as iam too active. So understanding the limitations and life style of a ankle fusion patience is vital.
thanks so much as i struggled to find anyone living with this. is there anyone i could talk to that is living with a fused ankle?
really appreciate your reply as i continue to downgrade my activity with this annoying problem
Kind regards
Doug

Hi Doug

We have a thread on ankle fusion that has been going on for several years but has replies in 2019. You can copy and paste it here: https://www.empowher.com/community/share/ankle-fusion-i-know-i%E2%80%99m-not-alone

You can post in there and start the conversation up again.

You can also google support groups for ankle fusion and or ask your doctor if she/he knows of support groups for you.

Let us know what you find - I'm sorry you're still going through this, it's very hard, especially for such an active person.

Best,
Susan
