A sharp stabbing pain in the ear canal and/or a feeling of fullness in the ear may be a sign of an ear infection. Drainage from the ear can also sign of infection. Often, a virus causes an ear infection, in which case antibiotics won’t help. If your doctor suspects that bacteria may have caused the infection, he or she will prescribe an antibiotic.
