As a child I never once had tonsillitis however in the past year- 18 months I've had it at least 5-6 times and also had a viral infection of the throat that lasted over a month, all I did my constantly cough until I vomited. Would having them removed help?

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER.  This is something your health care provider or ENT will decide.  Before surgery, some doctors choose to try antibiotic treatment first. In some cases like

  • Fever of 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C) or higher.
  • Enlarged or tender lymph nodes in the neck.
  • A pus-like coating, known as exudate, covering the tonsils or the surrounding throat area.
  • Evidence that the infection is streptococcal in origin

Surgery will be needed.  But the one to make that final decision is your ENT.

Here are some resources for you
