I'm 14 just recently had sex with my boyfriend for the first time. Since then I have had the urge to urinate all the time and when I do it stings a little and I get this feeling like I need to go again..I am a little worried as it was my first time and I don't know what to do.

Regards,
Taylor

Anon, it might go away without getting treatment for it; some UTI's do. But some don't. Do you want to tell your mom that you had sex but you just don't know how? Or do you just want to tell her you have a problem but don't want her to guess that you had sex?

I'm guessing that it's the last option -- that you want to get some treatment but you are afraid your mom will figure out that you've had sex. And at 14, you don't drive yet, either, so you can't take yourself to get treatment. (A walk-in clinic would be able to diagnose you and give you antibiotics if you need them.)

Do you have a friend with a driver's license who would be willing to take you to a minor emergency clinic or a walk-in clinic? You would have to pay for the visit yourself, but that's one way that you can get checked and get a prescription. Also, there are free clinics in some places; if you'd like us to try to find one of those for you, let us know the city and state you live in and we'll see what we can find.

Do consider taking your mom into your confidence. She may be sad and angry that you had sex, and I know that will be difficult, but I'm sure she wants what's best for you, and would take you to a doctor.

And if you have sex again, you MUST at least use a condom, OK? If you can't go to a gynecologist without telling your mom, you have to at least take responsibility for your own body and health. A condom won't prevent all instances of sexually transmitted disease, and you have to use them properly (leaving room at the top for when he ejaculates). But it will help prevent infections and unwanted pregnancies. If you are old enough to be sexually active, then you have to be responsible about it, OK?

Taylor,

It sounds like you may have a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). UTI's are really more annoying than anything else, but without proper treatment may lead to a more serious problem.

Some of the symptoms of a UTI are:
A strong, persistent urge to urinate
A burning sensation when urinating
Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
Blood in the urine (hematuria) or cloudy, strong-smelling urine
Bacteria in the urine (bacteriuria)

Urinary tract infections typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. This may have occurred during sex with your boyfriend, though sex is not necessary for this to happen.
You should contact your physician for diagnosis and treatment-- all that is necessary is a sample of your urine for this.

I would also urge you to see a gynecologist for a complete set of tests including all STD's and a routine pap smear now that you are sexually active. Your gynecologist or physician may also prescribe some form of birth control for you and for your safety-- use a condom as it is the only form of birth control (other than abstinence) that will protect you from STD's including HIV to some extent.

If you would like to read more on UTI's, you can do so here:

Hope this helps!

Thankyou! now my problem is solved. If I didn't get treatment for it and just waited it out hoping for it to go away, would it get worse? And if so, how bad could it get? I really don't know how to tell my mum about this.. any suggestions ?
