Q:

Can dislocated shoulder at birth cause issues later in life

I was born feet first. According to my mother the nurses panicked and try to pull my out. In doing this they caused my arm to dislocate. For the last few years I have been having pain in varying degrees in my shoulder area especially when i carry anything weighing more than 3kg. Could this be an after effect of dislocating my shoulder at birth or can it be caused by something else.

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Unfortunately, many babies have suffered dislocated shoulders during birth, leading to physical therapy and potential life-changing damage if the dislocation is not identified quickly.

You have not said how old you are or if you were diagnosed quickly at birth, or received any treatment. Therefore we can't say if your symptoms over the past few years are connected. Have you been treated recently or had any scans to see what is going on? We look forward to hearing back from you.
Best,
Susan

I am a 42 year old female. my shoulder was relocated and strapped. I never received treatment until a few years ago by a physiotherapist. I never had any scans done.

Hi again

The only way to know is to see you doctor and ask for scans - they may be able to determine more. If your shoulder was reset then that sounds like confirmation of a dislocation. But whether your issues now are connected with your birth is not something we can determine. Please keep us updated.
Best,
Susan
