You have many options for UC treatment, and the type of medication prescribed depends on what your symptoms are, as well as what the purpose of treatment is at the time (control symptoms, prevent acute symptoms or "attack", or healing the colon).

The types of medications you have been prescribed are types of "Aminosalicylate Medications" also known as "5-aminosalicylates" include Sulfasalazine and Mesalamine (the medications you unfortunately had an allergic reaction to). These medicines are prescribed to control symptoms and help reduce irritation and inflammation.

There are a few other types of medications categorized as "Aminosalicylate" or "5-aminosalicylates", including:
* Olsalazine
* Balsalazide disodium.
You can talk with your doctor or Pharmacist about these; I am not sure if you would be allergic to these as well.

The Hydrocort enema you are currently taking sounds like it is in another medicine category, called "Steroid Anti-inflammatory Medications" (also known as "corticosteroids"), that also help with inflammation and irritation. There are several different types of medications under this broad category, including:
* Prednisone
* Methylprednisolone
* Budesonide (in enema form---this is your current medication, correct?)

Other treatments for UC fall under these two categories:
"Immune Modifier Medications" also known as "Immunomodulators"
* Azathioprine
* 6-mercaptopurine
* Cyclosporine

"Biological Agents"
* Infliximab (or other biological treatments, if you do not respond to other medications)
