Anytime you have unprotected sex, there is a chance of pregnancy, regardless of timing during your cycle (sperm can live up to 3-5 days in your body, for one reason).

Only inserting the tip of the penis is not protection against pregnancy, as there can be the presence of pre-ejaculatory fluid or "pre-cum" from the moment a man's penis is erect. This "pre-cum" may contain semen.

It sounds like you engaged in something similar/close to the "Withdrawal Method", which is about 70-80% effective at preventing pregnancy. This is done by the man inserting his penis into the vagina (does not matter how far it goes in; does not matter how long his penis is inside), and then withdrawing his penis before ejaculating.
