Dr. Volkmar explains if Asperger's syndrome is a fatal diagnosis.

Dr. Volkmar:
Am not aware of any data on fatalities in Asperger’s. Actually, I only say it with one exception, which is sadly the thing I know of, (which is only anecdotal and you may or may not want to put this in) because of their increased risk for depression and because sometimes people don’t really notice the depression, because the person is still talking up a blue streak, there is probably some risk for suicide.

Fred Volkmar, M.D. is the director of the Yale University Child Study Center and Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology at Yale University, where he heads the university's autism research and autism clinic. He is also Chief of Child Psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental nature of autism and developing better guidelines to diagnose autism and related conditions.
