Darkina recallls how the supportive environment at the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS helped her to accept and treat her HIV diagnosis.
Darkina:
One of the other things that I did to help me be more comfortable with the disease that I have, to deal with the disease I have, support groups. Going to the Southwest HIV Center, being able to be around women that’s like myself, hearing their stories was a big help to the attitude that I have today.
Southwest Center have a meeting every Thursday just for women and when they are sharing their stories you always get a chance to hear something different from each woman, whatever it is that they are going through, so everybody’s story is different so, and the support groups.
Also the support group with Ebony House is a big support group for me. I go to their support groups for women on Wednesday, called ‘Sisters’ - sisters talking to sisters about AIDS. So talking about different…each person telling their story really helped me out a lot. I know I am not in this fight alone. I know I am not by myself.
