I am a 43 yr. old mother with a 16 yr. old son and I have had Type 1 JODM (juvenile onset diabetes mellitus) since the age of 2. I have had many, many complications from having this disease and at times I've wondered how I have gotten this far without losing my mind. I've been in and out of so many hospitals and doctor's/specialists offices for good and bad reasons it's not funny. The older I get, the harder it is to keep it all in check. I've suffered from diabetic retinopathy and literally almost lost my vision, have had many episodes of depression, I have balance problems (i.e. vertigo), insomnia, low tolerance for any kind of sickness, and numbness and tingling in 3 of my extremities. I love it when I have the good days because it gives me a chance to recharge myself
& enjoy what I do have left in my life.
I lost my nephew to cancer almost three years ago, he was only 13. It hasn't been easy and on my saddest days I think of him and smile (through the tears at times). We were so blessed to have him ...
