Love at First Sight; The Myth, The Magic, The Meaning

It's told to us in fairy tales from the time we learn to read or are read to, or watch our first animated movie. The concept of falling deeply in love at the first moment of seeing someone is so ingrained into not only American culture but cultures throughout the world that it is part of our experience, or imagined experience, as human beings.

But is it real? Is it possible to fall in love with someone at first sight or do we simply fall in lust and decide it's something more? And if it has ever happened to you, do remember throwing caution, reason, logic and thought to the wind and just being taken over by the moment?

While it seems one must be in the right frame of mind, that is, "ready" to fall in love in order to experience it, love at first sight really does happen. Partly, it may be that your genetics are kicking into high gear in a sort of recognition of a partner who would be genetically suitable or companionable for you. Intellectually you may be using your rational mind more than you know, sizing them up, recognizing a style, a societal value system, a kindred spirit. On a more esoteric level, some people believe that we are all looking for our soul mates, the other part of ourselves, the part that will make us feel complete and that falling in love at first sight is more of a recognition of your soul mate than really meeting someone for the first time.

In the bible, literature, plays and movies, characters succumb to the sensations and feelings of falling in love at first sight as these feelings carry them toward their destiny. Finding ways to deal with the strong emotions that accompany this feeling is crucial; for you may fall in love at first sight with someone who is simply not a healthy partner for you, or even unavailable; previously attached.
The intensity of falling in love at first sight can conjure a sense of spirituality; a sense that you have touched the divine, have found a spark of the essence of love and the meaning of your life on earth. No matter what your experience, love at first sight can and does occur and can be one of the most confusing, exhilarating and sacred experiences possible.
