8 Ways You Can Help Your Man Lead a Healthier Lifestyle

1) Help him eat a healthy diet

Nutritious food on the shopping list and on the table are part of a healthier lifestyle. Go for whole foods. Leave out the sugar, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, refined seed oils and vegetable oils. If he has diabetes or metabolic syndrome, or if he has trouble keeping his weight down, help him watch his carb intake. jackfrog/Fotolia

2) Take a walk together

Go for a 20-minute walk in the sun, get some natural vitamin D. Walking with a pedometer will tell him how many steps he's traveled. Experts suggest going for 10,000 steps a day. If he's a competitive sort he can compete with his best numbers. And if you're a competitive sort he can compete with you. Monkey Business/Fotolia

3) Do yoga or tai chi together

Tai chi and yoga gently improve balance, flexibility and strength and may improve blood pressure. Both tai chi and yoga encourage relaxation and stress relief. If either of you have health conditions that prevent other forms of exercise, consider these low-impact workouts. mayatnik/Fotolia

4) Do things you enjoy together

Being physically active can burn calories, improve mood, lift self-esteem and reduce the effects of stress. But none of that will happen if he doesn't like what he's doing. If he's doing something he loves, he's more likely to continue. Maybe he likes to swim or ride his bike. Join him in a dance class and make it a date night as well. pressmaster/Fotolia

5) Sleep together

Lack of sleep can leave him at risk for heart disease and other diseases. Lack of sleep also throws hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin out of balance, paving the way for unwanted weight gain. Does he have trouble sleeping? Is he not rested when he wakes up? Encourage him to find out if he has a sleep disorder like sleep apnea. Develop a sleep routine together in which you go to bed and get up around the same time each day. milanmarkovic78/Fotolia

6) Encourage him to go for tests

Lots of people need a nudge to see the doctor. Encourage him to get routine tests done. Help him find out how often he needs various tests. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, and certain cancers are some of the important things he should be screened for. vectorfusionart/Fotolia

7) Help him stay connected

Are you part of a family? Participate in family meals together. He will probably eat better, and have the emotional benefits of feeling more connected. Connections don't have to be with family. In fact depending on what yours is like, sometimes too much family togetherness is a negative thing. A support network of caring individuals doesn't have to be related to be genuinely nurturing. 8) Cultivate a positive atmosphere

Laughter can lift a mood, sometimes changing it completely for the better. Laughing triggers the release of endorphins. Added bonus: endorphins not only elevate mood, they also reduce the perception of pain. Does he meditate or pray? Does he spend 10 to 20 minutes a day in some type of contemplation? Even taking a short time away from the pressures and stress of daily life may lower blood pressure and improve his outlook on life. Rido/Fotolia
