Green Juice! My key to less anxiety, more health and happiness!

By Blogger July 26, 2012 - 8:55am

I’m one of those "strange" people who drink green juice. For the past few months I’ve been drinking it for breakfast: kale, cucumber, celery, apples, ginger and lemon on a typical day. Usually I make it at night and keep it refrigerated in a glass air-tight container until the morning. Sometimes I buy it at a juice store close to my job, but honestly, I love making it.

Back in April, I attended 'The Raw Food Institute" (RFI) in Washington, DC, and little did I know, it was a life-changing experience. The Raw Food Institute is a state of the art raw food healing and detoxification center Founded by Lisa Wilson.

I learned so much about using food as medicine and the power of fruits and vegetables. I learned how to grow my own wheatgrass. But the one thing that I have to say that I am so grateful to have learned about, was the benefits of green juicing and how to make my own juice!

I was already on my way to eating better, but this program sparked something in me that changed me forever. It was just another contributing factor to my journey to less anxiety.

Anxiety is a fairly common psychological condition characterized by a sense of dread, fear, or chronic worry over present of future life situations. Anxiety can also result in a variety of physical symptoms. These include breathing difficulties and/or shortness of breath, cold flashes, increased heart rate, perspiration, gastrointestinal problems, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, irritability, impaired mental function, and sleep disorders such as insomnia.

Although anxiety is considered primarily a psychological condition, dietary and nutritional imbalances and deficiencies can also be contributing factors. I believe that proper nutritional balance should always be considered as part of an overall treatment program for anxiety. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote that celery could be used to calm the nerves, and, indeed its very high calcium level is likely to be the reason for this phenomenon.

In the 3 months that I have been drinking the green juice, I have determined the following:

I have much more energy in the mornings and throughout the entire day.
I have much less anxiety, period!
I am able to sleep throughout the night. I used to wake up 2-3 times a night before I began juicing
I lost a total of 21lbs to date and plenty of inches (didn't track that)
My memory and brain function have improved. Those with anxiety know how important this is.
My PMS symptoms have drastically decreased
I just feel like an overall new person since I started to juice. It is an amazing feeling. The health benefits of green juice is immense for those suffering from anxiety.

Here is a recipe for the juice I make. I love this juice so much that I rarely juice anything other than this recipe.

Anti-Anxiety Green Juice aka "Mean Green" from the movie "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead"

2 green apples
4 stalks celery
6 bundles kale (take one leaf kale and fold it into itself so that it goes through your juicers feeder tube easily)
1/2 lemon (optional, it takes out the "green" taste that not everyone loves!)
1 cucumber
thumb-size piece of ginger root

Juice ingredients together and enjoy!

Have you tried Green Juicing yet? What are your thoughts on it? If not, are you ready to give it a try?

Sounds very similar to the one I drink often at whole foods. It is so healthy and delicious. It is called the "Waldorf" drink on the menu at my local store. Not sure what it might be on yours but it's a great way to taste it before you make it.
